Megan Thee Stallion
Hot Girl Summer Tour
2024
"...there is a seemingly endless supply of pyro – I have never seen so much fire at one show."
The Guardian
Playground turned up the heat and designed one of the year’s Hottest touring shows for Megan Thee Stallion’s Hot Girl Summer Tour.
The performance is an evolution of Megan told in three acts themed around transformation. Act 1: Her hard-hitting Snake beginnings full of stark colors, powerful lighting, pyrotechnics, and a cast of silhouetted beauties. Act 2: Megan shedding her scales and transforming into her sensual, dichroic butterfly era. Act 3: Megan and her Hotties take the audience on a journey of metamorphosis from concert to full-out dance party.
Team
How we got there
Megan is a dynamic entertainer and requires a dynamic production. For her inaugural tour, the team set out to design a playground of levels and performance spaces that were worthy enough to match her energetic performance style.
We were inspired by the organic shape language that embodied the themes of each of the show’s three acts. This led us to design a giant 30’ circular LED video stage as the primary performance space on the main stage. The show also features three massive monolithic LED video towers, a double snake head shaped lighting rig, and a circular runway. All of these elements reach far out into the audience to create an immersive concert experience, bringing Megan among her adoring Hottie fans.
To drive the story, The Playground creatively crafted a three act show that mimicked the themes of her most recent album “Megan.” From fiery colors in Act1 “Snake” to a colorful dichroic color palette in Act 2 “Butterfly”, the team developed a color story that would take the audience on a journey through color, light, and movement. The Playground continued the transformation into Act 3 “Body” by incorporating neutral colors and focusing on the human form.
Some of the show’s highlighted moments include a massive snake-like lighting sculpture that encapsulates Megan as she performs her emotional ballad “Cobra”, a giant dichroic chrysalis that reveals Megan from the top of Act 2 and spreads massive LED butterfly wings to announce her rebirth during her hit “Plan B”
“Megan Thee Stallion’s Hot Girl Summer Tour is worth a night out of the house if you are a fan of her music. She doesn’t cheat her fans with a lackluster stage presence or design.”
